With 25 film sequls and upwards of 100 TV episodes, Shintaro Katsu is the legendary Zatoichi! He’s a low-ranking blind masseur who lives by the Yakuza code and answers his foes with a deadly cane sword. By far one of Japan’s most time-honored screen personas, Zatoichi is to this day the ultimate everyman anti-hero.

A fast moving entry in the Blind Swordsman series, Zatoichi’s Vengeance is a tour de force of nonstop action. The blind swordsman meets a dying man who makes Zatoichi promise to deliver a large sum of money to his young son, Taichi. Zatoichi’s skill with his sword results in the death of several of the men, and Taichi sees Zatoichi as a second father. But a blind monk forces Zatoichi to qustion the violence of his existence and his future as a swordsman.

Tatsuo a young foot soldier in the yakuza seeks revenge when his prostitute girlfriend dies after a session with a high-ranking Japanese senator with a taste for torture. He sets out on a ‘kamikaze’ mission to kill his bosses and the politician; along the way, he acquires the aid of a taxi driver Kantake, who has recently returned to Japan after living in South America for several decades and is struggling to cope with poverty and the prejudices of native-born Japanese. The two form an unlikely bond, and eventually take on father-son roles. Kantake proves to be an invaluable ally in Tatsuo’s qust to take out the mob and the senator and everyone else who gets in his way.

In the cactus-studded Mexican backcountry of the 1860s, a surly drifter who could easily be mistaken for the Man with No Name becomes protector and lethal helpmate to a red-haired nun wanted by the French for aiding the Juarista revolutionaries. Essentially a two-character showcase for the newly stellar Clint Eastwood and what was beginning to seem the poststellar Shirley MacLaine (subbing for Elizabeth Taylor), this sardonic study in testy collaboration, mutual deception and distrust, and slightly creepy sexual attraction is highly rated by a fairly small number of critics–chiefly, one suspects, for the dual-auteur cachet of having been directed by Don Siegel and based on a story by Budd Boetticher. Others deem it an undersauced spaghetti Western and find that the stars grate on the viewer as well as each other. Cinematography by the great Gabriel Figuroa is some consolation, but… if only Boetticher had been allowed to direct. –Richard T. Jameson

The bloodiest battle ever fought on American soil is thoroughly examined in Lincoln & Lee at Antietam: The Cost of Freedom, a worthy addition to anyone’s Civil War video collection. Directed and written by Robert Child and narrated by Ronald F. Maxwell (the director of the definitive Civil War epics Gettysburg and Gods and Generals), this straightforward, no-nonsense documentary emphasizes the tactics, strategies, and historical context of the battle at Antietam, in Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862. Further emphasis is placed on the wartime conditions (political agendas, ready status of armies, etc.) that led to President Abraham Lincoln’s orders to defeat Gen. Robert E. Lee’s exhausted army at Antietam. Lee and other Confederate strategists had hoped to stage a surprise invasion, but Lee’s battle plans fell into the hands of the Union army, and Lincoln’s victory–which was essential to his issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery–turned Antietam into the pivotal battle of the war. Although Child (who also directed Gettysburg: Three Days of Destiny) uses dramatic readings, maps, and photographs (especially the legendary battleground photos of Matthew Brady) in a manner similar to Ken Burns’ epic-length documentary The Civil War, the look and presentation of Lincoln & Lee at Antietam is entirely different, with many sequnces involving contemporary Antietam reenactments. Many of the Civil War’s most colorful and important figures factor into this detailed 90-minute account, which clearly benefits from impeccable in-depth research. A 25-minute interview with Maxwell reveals the filmmaker’s massive 15-year commitment to bringing his epics to the screen, and his feature-length commentary with Child lends another layer of detailed information to this authoritative DVD. –Jeff Shannon

If you haven’t heard of the movie, here’s a quick plot:
Call it “Desperate Movie,” because this ludicrous thriller deteriorates into unintentional comedy. For reasons that are never explained, a sociopathic killer (Michael Keaton) is the only available bone marrow donor for the cancer-stricken son of a San Francisco cop (Andy Garcia), who must capture the killer alive after a laughable escape in a labyrinthine hospital. The ensuing manhunt relies on plentiful plot holes and ridiculous shortcuts (like Keaton’s use of a surgical laser to cut leg irons, or accessing hospital schematics from a prison computer). Self-consciously shot in film noir style, the cat-and-mouse routine leads to a briefly impressive car chase, but the premise (which even the movie’s original press notes described as “intriguing, if unlikely”) is based on “moral ambiguity” that doesn’t translate from script to screen. Instead of forcing Keaton’s typically “sick genius” to prove his ingenuity, the film pits him against a squad of cops who couldn’t find a beer in a crowded pub. –Jeff Shannon

This is a great movie! Probably one of my favorites. Colin Farrell does a great job, If you’re a fan, and you haven’t seen this movie – watch it now!

Set in the chillingly possible future of 2054, Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report is arguably the most intelligently provocative sci-fi thriller since Blade Runner. Like Ridley Scott’s “future noir” classic, Spielberg’s gritty vision was freely adapted from a story by Philip K. Dick, with its central premise of “Precrime” law enforcement, totally reliant on three isolated human “precogs” capable (du to drug-related mutation) of envisioning murders before they’re committed. As Precrime’s confident captain, Tom Cruise preempts these killings like a tru action hero, only to run for his life when he is himself implicated in one of the precogs’ visions. Inspired by the brainstorming of expert futurists, Spielberg packs this paranoid chase with potential conspirators (Max Von Sydow, Colin Farrell), domestic tragedy, and a heartbreaking precog pawn (Samantha Morton), while Cruise’s performance gains depth and substance with each passing scene. Making judicious use of astonishing special effects, Minority Report brilliantly extrapolates a future that’s utterly convincing, and too close for comfort. –Jeff Shannon
